What you’ll learn
The program moves from safety and HVAC basics to electrical controls, refrigeration and furnace operation, then finishes with a full skills review.
- Introduction to HVACHVAC systems and components, how air conditioning works, major heating components and basic tools.
- Jobsite safetySafe work practices on the job, from fall and electrical hazards to personal protective equipment.
- HVAC core skillsTool identification, measurements and units, basic heat transfer, and general and electrical safety.
- HVAC-specific safetyWorking safely with compressed gases and pressurized systems.
- HVAC fundamentalsTrades math, temperature, pressure, heat transfer, evaporators, condensers and refrigerants.
- Electrical for HVAC/ROhm’s law, meters and circuits, wiring diagrams, motors, capacitors, contactors and controls.
- HVAC maintenanceRoutine service and maintenance practices that keep systems running.
- Evacuation and chargingEvacuating, charging and recovering refrigerant in HVAC systems.

- Refrigerant handlingSafe refrigerant practices and the environmental rules that apply to them.
- Gas furnace sequence of operationsHow a gas furnace starts, runs and shuts down, step by step.
- Gas furnace simulations VR labDiagnosing furnace faults such as flame sensors, igniters, gas valves and thermostats.
- Electric furnace sequence of operationsHow an electric furnace operates and how to follow its sequence when troubleshooting.
- HVAC skills reviewRefrigeration cycle, components, electrical, diagnostics, charging and recovery, airflow and combustion safety.
Practice in VR labs
VR labs let you work through real service calls step by step before you do them on the job. Every lab runs on a standard Windows or Mac computer; a VR headset is optional.
- General furnace troubleshooting: follow the sequence of operations to find where a furnace stops.
- Common furnace faults: dirty filters, flame sensors, gas valves, igniters, control boards and switches.
- Thermostat and wiring problems: faulty thermostats and loose control wires.
Who it’s for
- Adults who want to start a career in heating and air conditioning. No prior experience is needed.
- Maintenance and facilities workers who want stronger HVAC skills.
- Employers who want to train new hires or upskill their current team.
Where it can lead
- Entry-level roles such as HVAC apprentice, installer assistant, refrigeration helper and maintenance technician.
- A head start on a registered apprenticeship.
- Career services: resume help, interview preparation and job-search guidance.
